A good start to the year (ok, it's nearly April...)

I don't know about you, but it's been a whirlwind start to the year for me. I can't believe I'm nearly at the end of the first quarter, and Spring is springing around me (that's the correct term, right?)

After a slow start to the year certifications-wise after a mental last half of the previous year VMware finally launched their VMware Cloud on AWS partner competency, which required that my company have someone certified as VCP-DCV 6.5. I'm really working to push towards anything cloud at the moment (more on that in a later blog), so I've been driving the salesfolk to get their VSPs done in order to get this competency so that I, in turn can get out there and have the chats with customers about the possibilities of VMConAWS - as such (and given that I'm the de-facto VMware guy at SBL) plus my VCP expires later this year I decided last Thursday that I'd sit the exam. I spent Friday going through the exam blueprint and buffing up on some of the new features (vCenter HA, VSAN encryption, that kinda stuff) in 6.5 and headed north to Newcastle (the closest place with availability at such short notice) to sit the exam.

I arrived about 40 minutes early, for some reason however there were seats available in the exam centre so I got cracking. A good portion of the questions seemed to be similar to previous VCP-DCV exams (though I guess that as I wasn't sitting the delta this was to be expected), and I was feeling moderately confident as I reviewed my answers, having got stuck on only 3 or 4 questions. I closed my eyes, hit Submit and...

470/500! I'm pretty chuffed with that score, I think it's the best I've had from a VMware exam.

So I'm now a 3 time VCP-DCV (5, 6, 6.5) and 1 time VCP-NV. I'm going to be out at VMware Empower in about 3 weeks, and will be shooting for another cert there - I was pondering having another go at VCP7-CMA, but...

...Frank might have convinced me to go for a shot at my first VCAP instead. Let's see...

In other news, after much chewing of fingernails and a couple of delays the 2018 vExpert intake was announced a couple of weeks ago. I'm proud to say that I made the cut, and am now just waiting on a lovely 3 star sticker for the back of my laptop.

As always I'm incredibly proud to be allowed to stick around and call myself a vExpert: it's a great honour and every time I submit I assume I'll fail to meet the grade. It's a most excellent group of folks, and being able to bounce ideas off people in the vExpert Slack is worth it's weight in gold. Thanks as always to Corey, Eric, Katie and the crew.

Ok, on my way to #LonVMUG to talk to folks about VMConAWS, Blue Medora and GDPR!
